DUSHANBE, December 17, 2011, Asia-Plus – A Tajik-Ukrainian joint venture for assembling tractors will be launched in Tajikistan, the Tajik presidential press service reports.

On Friday December 16, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon visited Dnipropetrovsk, the third most populous city in Ukraine, as part of his official visit to Ukraine.

In Dnipropetrovsk, Emomali Rahmon visited the Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant, or Yuzhmash.

The Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant, or PA Yuzhmash (Production Association Southern Machine-Building Plant) is reportedly a Ukrainian manufacturer of carrier rockets, agricultural equipment, buses, trolley buses and trams, aircraft spare parts, and wind turbines.  It is a large state-owned company located in Dnipropetrovsk.  Yuzhmash is now one of the largest industrial enterprises in Ukraine.   According to Wikipedia, as of January 2003, Yuzhmash employed 13,000 workers.

The sides reportedly reached an agreement on launching a joint venture in Tajikistan that would assemble tractors “YuMZ” and other agricultural equipment.

Friday afternoon, Tajik leader also visited the National Mining University of Ukraine in Dnipropetrovsk.  He met with students and teachers as well as representatives of Tajik Diaspora in Ukraine.

The National Mining University was founded in 1899 as the Yekaterinoslav Higher Mining School.  The task of the university then was to provide the mining industry with highly qualified specialists, a goal that has continued to direct the university”s leadership right up to the present day, although in recent years its academic offer has developed beyond the confines of mining-related subjects.  Currently, its structure consists of nine faculties (academic departments).

Seven Tajik students are currently studying at Ukraine’s National Mining University and the quota for Tajik students will be increased in the future.

In all, more than 400 Tajik students are currently studying at various universities in Ukraine.
