DUSHANBE, January 14, 2012, Asia-Plus  — A drug peddler has been arrested with a consignment of ecstasy tablets in Dushanbe.

An official source at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) says police officers seized a consignment of 33 ecstasy tablets in west Dushanbe on Thursday, January 12.  A 34-year-old man was arrested Thursday evening after the drugs weighing some 10 grams were found in his bag, the source said.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted and an investigation is under way.

MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) – colloquially known as ecstasy, often abbreviated “E” or “X” – is an entactogenic drug of the phenethylamine and amphetamine class of drugs.  MDMA can induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, and diminished anxiety.

MDMA is criminalized in most countries under the United Nations agreement, and its possession, manufacture, or sale may result in criminal prosecution.
