KULOB, February 5, 2012, Asia-Plus  — A large consignment of counterfeit energy-saving light bulbs, also called as compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), has been seized in the Kulob region of Khatlon province.

Habibullo Safarov, the head of Tojikstandart (Agency for Standardization, Metrology, Certification and Trade Inspection)’s office in Kulob, told Asia-Plus on Saturday that 1,380 Chinese-made CFLs without certificate of quality and appropriate accompanying note have been seized in the area.

According to him, 774 high wattage incandescent lamps “that are banned from sale in Tajikistan were withdrawn from shelves last year.”

Meanwhile, there are no special facilities for repairing and recycling energy-saving light bulbs in the Kulob region.  The Kulob agency for environmental protection says more than 10,000 used energy-saving light bulbs have been stored in the area so far and “nobody knows where to send them.”
