Temporary commission on ecology issues under the parliament of Tajikistan (Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli) held its session on April 10 in Dushanbe.

According to the chamber’s press service, apart from members of the commission the session was attended by representatives of related ministries and departments of the Republic.

The commission dedicated its session to consideration and analysis of the activity of the Tajik Aluminum Company (Talco) and the company’s cooperation with governmental structures and international organizations in terms of ecology related issues.

Members of the commission urged Talco to activate its cooperation with governmental and international organizations on ecologic issues and environment protection issues.

The commission made a decision to make at least two visits to the company and study its activity and submit the results of these visits and outcomes to the Lower Chamber of the Parliament.

It should be noted that ecology officials from neighboring Uzbekistan claim that Talco’s activity impacts the population’s health and causes damage to natural environment.

Talco, however, believes that such statements are groundless.

The commission of the Lower Chamber of the Parliament, which consists of 15 deputies, was set up in spring 2010 as a response to the Uzbek parliamentary fraction “Ecologic Movement of Uzbekistan.”
