The World Bank and Tajikistan are holding talks on technical issues of the Rogun project, BBC Tajikistan reported citing an inside source as saying.

In his interview to BBC a WB insider said that “now we are discussing technical aspects of the project only.”

The source said that the talks are currently under way and the World Bank is not going to make any public announcements until the talks are over.

The insider also failed to answer a question regarding current location of international experts who carried out assessment of the Rogun project.

In his interview to BBC one of former officials of the Rogun HPP public corporation who wished to remain unknown said that international experts who were hired by the World Bank for assessment of the project have left the republic last year due to disagreement with Tajik officials on the project.

“Experts returned back to the construction site following related talks between the sides,” the source reported.

According to the source, “discussion of technical aspects” means that international experts urge to reduce the dam’s height from 335m down to 170m.

He also said that experts express their concerns over the future of those people who should be resettled from the future location of the hydropower plant to other places.

“They also want to get the detailed information about the impact of Rogun’s reservoir on Amu-Darya basin states,” the source said. “They were provided with this information and they were happy. However, after a while they returned back to this subject and asked for additional information.”
