DUSHANBE, August 23, 2012, Asia-Plus  — On Wednesday August 22, Tajik Ambassador to Pakistan Zubaydullo Zubaydov met in Karachi with Mr. Qamar Hussain, President of the National Bank of Pakistan (NBT), the Tajik MFA information department reports.

Issues related to further expansion of banking ties between Tajikistan and Pakistan were a major topic of the talks.

Ambassador Zubaydov reportedly noted that Tajikistan and Pakistan had a good potential for expansion of trade and financial cooperation.

For his part, Mr. Qamar Hussain noted that opening of NBP’s branch with authorized capital of 50 million somoni in Dushanbe had given a new impulse to further expansion of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

According to him, NBP’s branch in Dushanbe has begun investing in enhancement of some special sectors of Tajikistan’s entrepreneurship, the source said.

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) is one of the largest commercial bank operating in Pakistan. It has redefined its role and has moved from a public sector organization into a modern commercial bank. While it continues to act as trustee of public funds and as the agent to the State Bank of Pakistan (in places where SBP does not have a presence) it has diversified its business portfolio and is today a major lead player in the debt equity market, corporate investment banking, retail and consumer banking, agricultural financing, treasury services and is showing growing interest in promoting and developing the country”s small and medium enterprises and at the same time fulfilling its social responsibilities.

Founded in 1949, NBP, with headquarters in Karachi, now reportedly has over 1,250 branches country wide.  The bank provides both commercial and public sector banking services.

NBP officially opened its branch in Dushanbe on March 24, 2012.  The inaugural ceremony of the branch of the National Bank of Pakistan in Dushanbe was attended by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

NBP also has branches /offices in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, Bahrain, Egypt, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, China, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Saudi Arabia.
