DUSHANBE, December 17, 2012, Asia-Plus  — The 10th grade student from the Dushanbe-based Lyceum, Hotam & P.V., Gholibjon Emomov, has won the first round of the International Mathematical Olympiad “Formulo de Integreco” (the Formula of Unity) that is being held under support of the Euler Foundation.

Gholibjon Emomov won the first round of the Olympiad with 35 points.

“If Gholibjon wins the second round he will be invited to a distance mathematics study group,” Hotam & P.V. principal Abdufattoh Hotamov told Asia-Plus in an interview.

As member of the distance mathematics study group, Gholibjon Emomov could also be invited to the International Mathematical Summer Camp “Formulo de Integreco” in the future.

Euler Foundation jointly with St. Petersburg State University has organized International Summer Mathematical Camp “Formulo de Integreco” for schoolchildren from Russia, Spain and all other countries of the world, who have demonstrated their interest and abilities for mathematics since 2012.

According to information posted on Euler Foundation’s website, the jury completed the evaluation of solutions of the first round on December 16.  Every solution was evaluated out of 7 points; thus, the maximal result could be 42 points.  135 junior participants with at least 18 points and 74 senior participants with at least 11 points are invited to participate in the second round.

Euler Foundation was established in 2006 on the occasion of a jubilee of the great scientist Leonard Euler.  It works in the area of support of mathematics and mathematical education in Russia.

Leonard Euler (April 15, 1707 – September 18, 1783) was a pioneering Swiss mathematician and physicist. He made important discoveries in fields as diverse as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function.  He is also renowned for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, and astronomy.  Euler spent most of his adult life in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in Berlin, Prussia.  He is considered to be the preeminent mathematician of the 18th century, and one of the greatest mathematicians to have ever lived.
