DUSHANBE, June 3, 2013, Asia-Plus – The board (Shuro) of Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament considered a draft law on management of radioactive waste at a June 3 meeting, presided over by the Majlisi Namoyandagon speaker, Shukurjon Zuhurov.
“This law has been drafted by the government for the purpose of working out a single policy in the field of management of radioactive waste in the country,” Said Yoqubzod, the head of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Committee on Agriculture, Water and Land Resources told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, this law will ensure attraction of investments and grants for safe disposal of radioactive waste in Tajikistan. “More than 55 million tons of radioactive waste is stored in tailing dumps in Tajikistan, primarily in the Sughd province,” Yoqubzod said.
“To-date, mainly Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia have shown interest in providing safe disposal of radioactive waste in Tajikistan,” Tajik MP added.
This issue has reportedly been tabled to the agenda of the next sitting of the fourth session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the fourth convocation that will take place on June 5.
