DUSHANBE, September 20, Asia-Plus – On Wednesday September 18, Tajik Ambassador to the United States, Nouriddin Shamsov, met in Washington with U.S. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries.

According to the Tajik Embassy in Washington, the sides discussed a number of issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States as well as the current situation in Central Asia and Afghanistan and Tajikistan’s regional and global initiatives on water and energy problems.

They also discussed the results of the international high-level conference on water cooperation that took place in Dushanbe on August 20-22 and exchanged views on some regional and international issues being of mutual interest.

Ambassador Shamsov reportedly expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United States and called on the U.S. government and business circles to participate more actively in implementation of energy, agricultural, industrial and infrastructure development projects in Tajikistan.

For his part, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries highly appraised the current level of bilateral cooperation between the United States and Tajikistan on providing regional security and strengthening control of the Tajik-Afghan border.     

As member of the US House of Representatives, representing New York”s 8th congressional district in Brooklyn and Queens, Mr. Jeffries reportedly expressed interest in establishment of direct contacts between companies located in this part of New York and enterprises of Tajikistan.    

Hakeem Sekou Jeffries (born August 4, 1970) is a Democratic member of the US House of Representatives, representing New York”s 8th congressional district in Brooklyn and Queens and is running again for the seat in 2014. Previously to the seat, he served in the New York State Assembly from 2007 to 2013, representing the 57th Assembly district.
