DUSHANBE, October 16, 2013, Asia-Plus – A series of three workshops on raising Tajik business awareness on the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and regulations, as well as Tajikistan commitments and their impact to country’s economic sectors started in Dushanbe on October 16.
The International Trade Center (ITC) and Tajik Chamber of Commerce and Industry have brought together representatives of Tajik private sector to improve understanding and skills of Tajikistan business private sector on benefits, challenges and business implications of WTO membership of the country.
Parviz Kamoliddinov, National Consultant on Trade Policy International Trade Center (ITC), says the workshops are being conducted by the local experts, who were directly involved into the republic’s accession to WTO process.
The series of workshops started today in Dushanbe for business representatives from districts subordinate to the center and will be continued within the following schedule: Qurghon Teppa, Khatlon province on October 17, and Khujand, Sughd province on October 19.
WTO role in the international trade, its fundamental principles, Tajikistan accession process, and market access commitments taken by the country, impact of Tajikistan membership in WTO to agricultural, processing and textile sectors, as well as international trade disputes solving under WTO frames will be discussed in the workshops.
Current trade challenges Tajik exporters face in the foreign markets and country’s WTO membership impact in overcoming those challenges will also be discussed.
The workshops are held under the ITC project on “Implementation of WTO Provisions and Business Awareness of WTO Accession” funded by the Government of Switzerland through the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
“Implementation of WTO Provisions and Business Awareness of WTO Accession” project is Component TWO of the SECO’s Trade Cooperation Program (TCP) in Tajikistan, which overall objective is to contribute to the implementation of complex domestic reforms in Tajikistan to ensure compliance with the WTO provisions. The International Trade Center (ITC), through this technical assistance project, is committed to support Tajikistan’s private sector in strengthening its knowledge of the opportunities and challenges stemming from the WTO membership.
