DUSHANBE, November 25, 2013, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has extended condolences to his Latvian counterpart Andris Berzins over the collapse of the Maxima supermarket in Riga, which left more than 50 dead and 40 injured, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

Tajik leader also asked to convey his condolences to the families affected.

At least 54 people were killed after the roof of a supermarket collapsed in the Latvian capital, Riga.  Some 40 other people were injured, including 13 firefighters who rushed to the scene, and 23 people remained hospitalized as of Saturday afternoon.

International media source report that it is not yet clear what caused the collapse.  The BBC says a garden was being constructed on the roof of the supermarket at the time.

The 500 sq m store, run by the Maxima chain, opened in 2011.  The collapse happened just before 18:00 local time on November 22, when the store was busy with people shopping on their way home from work.

Latvia”s president described the disaster at the Maxima supermarket in Riga, the worst in the Baltic country since it regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, as “murder” and called for a speedy investigation into its cause.
