DUSHANBE, December 30, 2013, Asia-Plus – A new deadly explosion hit the Russian city of Volgograd Monday morning.  The blast reportedly took place at a busy time on a busy route.

Russian media sources quoted Volgograd vice-governor Vasily Galushkin as saying that at least 15 people have been killed and 23 others hurt in a suspected suicide bombing on a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The explosion reportedly took place near a busy market in Volgograd’s Dzerzhinsky district Monday morning at around 8:35 am.

The trolleybus was reportedly packed with people going to work in the morning rush hour.  The explosion removed much of the bus”s exterior and broke windows in nearby buildings.

The trolleybus blast comes a day after 17 people died in another suicide attack at a train station in Volgograd on December 29 at around 12:45.

A spokesman for Russia”s Investigative Committee reportedly said both explosions were now being treated as acts of terrorism.

BBC News reports that Moscow is concerned militant groups could be ramping up violence in the run-up to the 2014 winter Olympic Games in the city of Sochi.  The Olympic venue is close to Russia”s volatile north Caucasus region.
