DUSHANBE, February 12, 2014, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament has ratified the protocol on amendments to the government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Russia on labor activity and protection of rights of Tajik nationals in Russia and protection of rights of Russian nationals in Tajikistan.

A regular sitting of the fifth session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the fourth convocation was held on February 12.

Speaking at the session, Minister of Labor, Migration and Employment, Ms. Sumangul Taghoyeva, noted that the government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Russia on labor activity and protection of rights of Tajik nationals in Russia and protection of rights of Russian nationals in Tajikistan was signed on October 16, 2004.

Tajik citizens are now eligible to obtain three-year work permits in Russia.  The protocol changing the regulation from the current one-year maximum was signed in Moscow on October 29, 2013.

Ms. Taghoyeva also noted that last year an estimated 800,000 Tajik seasonal workers traveled abroad, primarily to the Russian Federation and 643,000 people returned back to Tajikistan.

We will recall that Russian State Duma speaker Sergey Naryshkin officially announced in Dushanbe in early September last year that Tajik citizens would be eligible to obtain three-year work permits. Naryshkin, who then visited Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, also called on Dushanbe to “become part of the Eurasian integration process.”
