Issues of establishment of independent communications regulator discussed in Dushanbe

DUSHANBE, April 1, 2014, Asia-Plus — Events dedicated to Tajikistan’s World Trade Organization’s (WTO) commitments in the field of telecommunications and broadcasting services were launched in Dushanbe today.

The events are carried out by the Public Foundation Civil Initiative on Internet Policy (CIPI) under support of the Tajik Branch of the Open Society Institute /Assistance Foundation (OSC/AF-Tajikistan).

“A roundtable and training seminars to raise public awareness of Tajikistan’s WTO commitments in the field of telecommunications will be conducted during three days,” CIPI chairperson, Ms. Parvina Ibodova, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

The events that will bring together representatives of president’s office, relevant ministries and agencies as well civil society and media are a logical continuation of a conference on Tajikistan’s World Trade Organization’s (WTO) commitments in the field of telecommunications and broadcasting services that took place in Dushanbe on March 18-19, Ibodova noted.

“We have invited experts from Moldova and Armenia – the WTO member nations that have already passed the way of establishing independent communications regulators,” said CIPI chairperson.  “They will share their experience in establishing the independent communications regulators.”

Independent telecommunications organizations in Tajikistan consider that lack of the independent communications regulator in the country is one of the main problems facing Tajikistan’s telecommunications sector.
