DUSHANBE, August 11, 2014, Asia-Plus — The Social-Democratic Party of Tajikistan (SDP) is expected to hold its pre-election congress in December.

“We plan to hold our pre-election congress from December 17-18,” SDP leader Rahmatillo Zoyirov told Asia-Plus in an interview.

This month, SDP leader is scheduled to visit the party’s organizations in the regions to discuss the parliamentary elections due in February next year.

Founded in 2002, the Social-Democratic Party was registered on December 20, 2002.  It was originally registered as the Party of Justice and Development on February 5, 1999.  Tajikistan”s Ministry of Justice requested the same year that the Supreme Court ban the party”s activities and its registration was canceled.  The party re-emerged and was registered under the name of the Social-Democratic Party in late 2002.  Chairman of the Social-Democratic Party is Rahmatillo Zoyirov and the party reportedly has more than 8,000 members.

Under Tajikistan’s election legislation, the date for parliamentary elections is established no later than 75 days before the end of the term of the parliament.  The term of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) expires on February 28, 2015.  Elections to the upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament will be carried out 25 days after elections to the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
