DUSHANBE, October 1, 2014, Asia-Plus – CIS inter-MFA consultations on the current situation in Afghanistan and its impact on security in the Central Asian region are being held in Moscow today.
According to the CIS Executive Committee, participants in the consultations are analyzing the current military and political situation in Afghanistan.
The will also voice positions of their countries on the withdrawal of international coalition forces from Afghanistan and signing of the U.S.-Afghanistan Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA)
Under this agreement that was signed in Kabul on September some 10,000 U.S. troops can remain in Afghanistan after the international combat mission ends on December 31 this year.
Consultations will also focus on issues related to providing control of Central Asian countries’ borders with Afghanistan and countering spread of terrorism, religious extremism and drug trafficking in the region.
Besides, participants in the consultations plan to discuss the role of the CIS nations in promoting inter-Afghan peace negotiation process, participation of the CIS nations in reconstruction of Afghanistan’s economy and prospects of further expansion of trade and economic cooperation of the CIS countries with Afghanistan.
