DUSHANBE, June 9, 2015, Asia-Plus /Avaz Yuldoshev/ — Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan do not receive compensation for water resources from the downstream countries in the Central Asian region.
Kyrgyz Prime Minister Temir Sariyev stated this in Dushanbe today while delivering a statement at the ceremony of opening of the high-level international conference on the implementation of the International Decade for Action, “Water for Life”, 2005-2015.
According to him, the downstream countries in the Central Asian region have always interpreted the UN water conventions for their benefit.
“Kyrgyzstan accumulates water in the Toktogul HPP’s reservoir during the winter period for summer needs of the downstream countries due to introduction of electricity rationing but it receives nothing in exchange for this,” the Kyrgyz prime minister noted.
He stressed that an agreement on joint use of transboundary rivers signed between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan could serve as a module of cooperation between the countries of the region. “This agreement takes into account interests of both Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan,” Sariyev added.
