DUSHANBE, February 16, 2016, Asia-Plus — The issues of improving pesticides registration systems will be discussed during FAO National Workshop, which will take place in Dushanbe on February 18, according to FAO CO in Tajikistan.

The objective of the workshop is to present the outcomes of the study on pesticide management in Tajikistan and discussion of follow-up possibilities of strengthening pesticide registration and the quality control system.

It is expected that 20 specialists from related state agencies and international FAO partner-organizations will participate in this event.

“In the framework of cooperation projects and programs, the FAO is providing technical support to the countries in the region on improving pesticide management. One of the main areas of cooperation is the implementation of efficient pest management techniques, like Integrated Pest Management, which reduces pesticide use and safeguards the environment”, – said Mr. Hafiz Muminjonov, FAO Office on plant production and protection.

A wide range of issues related to pesticide life-cycle management, particularly, improving the pesticide registration system, drafting regulations, developing and publishing the Catalogue of Registered Pesticides will be discussed in the workshop.

“Nowadays farmers use various chemical agents to combat diseases and pests, and some of them could be harmful for human, animals, and environment. Therefore, Tajik Government asked FAO for technical assistance on strengthening pesticides registration and control”, – said Mr. Viorel Gutu, FAO Representative in Tajikistan.

The event is organized under  FAO  project “Support on introduction and use of strategies on Integrated Plant Protection for prioritize field and horticultural crops in Tajikistan”, in collaboration with the  Ministry of Agriculture,  and Committee on protecting environment under Government of Tajikistan.
