DUSHANBE, April 1, 2016, Asia-Plus – On Friday April 1, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in Dushanbe with visiting Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who currently serves as Chairman-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) with regard to 2016 German chairmanship of the OSCE.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, they discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and Germany within the framework of the OSCE and other international and regional organizations.

President Rahmon reportedly stated that Tajikistan supports Germany’s top priorities set for its rotating OSCE Chairmanship period and would do its best to revive the spirit of confidence and security within the OSCE area.

Rahmon and Steinmeier exchanged views on issues related to the situation on the border, the latest developments in Afghanistan, the fight against terrorism and extremism and some other international and regional issues being of mutual interest.

Discussing prospects of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Germany, they reportedly stressed that cooperation between Dushanbe and Berlin was at the stage of expansion.

During the meeting, Tajik leader appreciated Germany’s support for transportation and environmental protection projects in Tajikistan.

The two sides reportedly showed interest in expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of science, education, culture, and health.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).  He has served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs since 2013.

Germany took over the rotating OSCE Chairmanship on January 1, 2016 and Germany’s top priorities reportedly include rebuilding trust among participating States and maintaining efforts for achieving a political solution to the conflict in and around Ukraine.
