DUSHANBE, May 20, Asia-Plus – Speaker of Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament, Shukurjon Zuhurov, on May 20 met with speaker of Kazakhstan’s lower chamber (Majilis) of parliament, Baktykozha Izmukhambetov, in St. Petersburg on the sidelines of the 44th plenary session of the Inter-parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent State (IPA CIS).

Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, says the two discussed a broad range of issues related to cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries.

They also discussed state and prospects of further expansion of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Besides, Zuhurov and Izmukhambetov exchanged views on problems of providing regional security and establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan, Sultonov said.  

According to the 1995 Constitution of Kazakhstan, the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan is the bicameral legislature of Kazakhstan.  The lower house is the Majilis, with 107 seats, (98 seats are from party lists, 9 – from Assembly of People) and are elected to four year terms.  The upper house is the Senate, which has 47 members.
