DUSHANBE, July 14, 2016, Asia-Plus – UNICEF Country Office in Tajikistan has presented The State of the World”s Children 2016 report.
The discussion took place on July 14 at the UN Information and Resource Center (UN IRC), which is located at the Russian Tajik Slavic University (RTSU) in Dushanbe.
Each year, UNICEF’s flagship publication, The State of the World”s Children, closely examines a key issue affecting children.
The State of the World”s Children 2016 report notes that every child has the right to health, education and protection, and every society has a stake in expanding children’s opportunities in life. Yet, around the world, millions of children are denied a fair chance for no reason other than the country, gender or circumstances into which they are born.
The report argues that progress for the most disadvantaged children is not only a moral, but also a strategic imperative. Stakeholders have a clear choice to make: invest in accelerated progress for the children being left behind, or face the consequences of a far more divided world by 2030. At the start of a new development agenda, the report concludes with a set of recommendations to help chart the course towards a more equitable world.
Due to joint efforts of the Government of Tajikistan, UNICEF and its partners, 945 children with disabilities, including 354 girls, in Tajikistan could use rehabilitation services in 2015. However, more than 80 percent of children with disabilities in the country do not receive formal education.
The Government of Tajikistan ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child soon after Independence, in 1993, thus committing itself to the progressive realization of children’s rights and holding itself accountable for this commitment before the international community. This formed the foundation for a strong partnership between the Government of Tajikistan and UNICEF. UNICEF initiated its support to the women and children of Tajikistan in 1993.
