DUSHANBE, July 14, 2016, Asia-Plus – Over the first six months of this year, Tajik athletes have won 119 medals, including 38 gold medals, at various international tournaments, Akhtam Abdullozoda, Chairman of the Committee for Youth Sports and Tourism under the Government of Tajikistan, announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on July 14.

According to him, the Committee has spent more than 1.2 million somoni to provide participation of Tajik athletes in Olympic qualifying tournaments and other international competitions.

We will recall that five Tajik athletes have earned quota spots through their respective sports” Olympic qualification processes: track and field athlete Davron Ataboyev; hummer thrower Dilshod Nazarov; boxer Anvar Yunusov; and two judokas Komronshoh Ustopiriyon and Muhammadmurod Abdurahmonov.

Besides, International Swimming Federation (FINA) notes that two Tajik swimmers – Anastasia Tyurina and Olim Qurbonov – have been accepted for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.  They will compete in a distance of 50 meters freestyle.

2,802 various sports competitions have been held in Tajikistan over the same six-month period, and 1,027,937 athletes have participated in them, which was 15 percent more than in the same period last year, Abdullozoda said.
