Dushanbe Mayor Rustam Emomali, who was nominated by the ruling People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan, won by-election to the Dushanbe legislature (Majlis) that took place in constituency # 25 on April 2 with a turnout of 86.89 percent of eligible voters, the head of the Dushanbe electrical commission, Abdullo Kholiqov, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, Rustam Emomali won with 84.81 percent of the vote, with his opponents, Fazliddin Ikromov of the Agrarian Party of Tajikistan and Hikmatullo Saidiyon of the Democratic Party of Tajikistan, garnering just 7.81 and 2.65 percent of the vote respectively.

Recall, former Dushanbe Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev represented constituency # 25 in the Dushanbe legislature.

He announced on February 7 that he has given up his seat in the city's local parliament.

Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, 64, was mayor of Dushanbe for 19 years.  By president’s decree of January 12 Ubaidulloyev was replaced by President Emomali Rahmon's son, Rustam Emomali.  Ubaidulloyev remains chairman of the parliament's upper chamber, the Majlisi Milli, which is the second highest post in Tajikistan.

Meanwhile, former deputy mayor of Dushanbe, Firouz Ulmasov, has also given up his seat in the Dushanbe legislature and by-election took place in constituency # 62 on April 2.

The member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan, Mahmadsaid Zuvaydzoda, who is the first deputy mayor of Dushanbe, has reportedly won overwhelming majority of votes.  His opponents, Ms. Manzouma Abdulloyeva of the Agrarian Party of Tajikistan and Ms. Vasila Fayzullobekova managed to garn just 11.65 and 8.78 percent of the vote respectively.
