Tajikistan plans to give up production of raw materials and semi-finished units and make shift to complete production cycle in the coming decade.

Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament (Majlisi Oli) last week adopted the Industry Development Strategy (Strategy) designed for the period up to 2030.

The main objective of this document is in giving up production of raw materials and semi-finished units and making shift to the complete production cycle (production of export-oriented and import-substituting goods).  

The document, in particular, notes that Tajikistan’s industry functions as exporter of metal concentrates, raw materials, textile semi-finished products and various canned fruits and vegetables.

According to the Strategy, it is necessary to attract foreign investors for modernization of production.  

One of the main objectives of the Strategy is in increasing the share of industry in the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) to 25 percent by 2030.  In 2017, the share of industry in Tajikistan’s GDP was 17 percent.  

As of January 1, 2018, 1,942 industrial enterprises were reportedly in operation in the country.  

In the current structure of Tajikistan’s industry, the share of mining sector is 34.4 percent, food industry – nearly 26.9 percent, light industry – some 15.9 percent, production of building materials – 13.7 percent, metalworking and chemical industry – 7.6 percent, and coal-mining industry – 1.6 percent.
