The brother of one of informal leaders of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) has been detained in Khorog.  He has reportedly been arrested for hooliganism committed in 2014.

Tohir Mamadboqirov, the brother of one of informal leaders of GBAO Mamadboqir Mamadboqirov, has been arrested in Khorog, a source in Khorog told Asia-Plus by phone today morning.

According to him, Tohir Mamadboqirov is charged with failure to obey the lawful order of police officers.

Later on, police reportedly told his relatives that he was detained in accordance with criminal proceedings that were instituted against him in 2014.

In 2014, Tohir Mamadboqirov was reportedly charged with hooliganism and since that time he has been wanted by police.

Meanwhile, he lives in Khorog and works as guard at one of hospitals in Khorog for several years.

Umarjon Emomali, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, says Tohir Mamadboqirov was detained on January 3 while driving Mercedes with tinted glass.  “It turned out that the car’s windows were tinted illegally and Tohir Mamadboqirov does have authorization to drive that car.  During detention, he insulted police officers,” Emomali said, noting that Tohir Mamadboqirov was taken to the Khorog border unit.

According to him, Tohir’s friends and relatives have gathered outside the Khorog border unit demanding immediate release of Tohir Mamadboqirov.

“But Tohir Mamadboqirov will not be released until he answers before the law for the crime committed in 2014,” the Interior Ministry spokesman added.
