Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov, is arriving in Dushanbe today on a two-day official visit.  

Russian foreign minister is scheduled to hold talks with high-ranking Tajik state officials to discuss issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan as well as cooperation between the two nations within the frameworks of international and regional organizations such as the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO),

Lavrov is reportedly scheduled to hold talks with his Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.  

According to the Russian MFA’s website, Lavrov’s visit to Tajikistan is expected to result in signing of a program of cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries for 2019.   

The Russian MFA notes that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries is expanding dynamically and joint large-scale investment project are being implemented in various fields.  

Russia reportedly remains leading economic partner of Tajikistan and the two-way trade between the two countries rose 28 percent in a year to December 31, 2018, reaching nearly 1 billion U.S. dollars.

More than 300 enterprises with Russian capital now operate in Tajikistan  

Sergey Lavrov (born March 21, 1950) is a Russian diplomat and politician.  In office since 2004, he is the Foreign Minister of Russia.  Previously, he was the Russian Representative to the UN, serving from 1994 to 2004.

Sergey Lavrov is regarded as continuing in the style of his predecessor: a brilliant diplomat but a civil servant rather than a politician.
