A group of employees of water sector in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) say they have not received wages for already half a year.

In their letter to Asia-Plus, they note that they are ready to forgive the wage debts for the last year and ask to pay their wages for this year.

“The authorities should understand that we have families and children and we must feed and clothe them and send them to school.  There are also other problems in family.  What to do if they do not pay a penny?” the letter says.

Representatives of the head office of the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation have confirmed complaints given in the letter by the GBAO irrigators.

One of employees the Agency says that all employees of the Agency have not received wages since the beginning of this year “because of lack of centralized financing.”

Meanwhile, one of workers of Vodkhos (water sector) says the problem with delaying payment of wages has been existed since the establishment of the Agency.

An average monthly wage of employees of the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation is 600.00 somoni, and irrigators in the provinces have not received wages for months.

According to Director of the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation, Kholmurod Rahmon, Tajikistan needs at least $750 million to rehabilitate its irrigation system.
