The value of the Tajik national currency, the somoni (TJS), has continued to depreciate against the U.S. dollar, registering an average official buying rate (the buying rate is the rate at which money dealers will buy foreign currency) of the dollar against the somoni 1:6872 on December 31, up from 1:9.4298 on January 1.

This year, the somoni has lost 2.7 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar (at the National Bank rate).

Tajikistan saw the sharp currency devaluation in August, when an average official buying rate of USD against TJS increased from 1:9.43 to 1:9.70.

The NBT specialists attribute devaluation of the Tajik national currency against the dollar to a negative trade balance, decline in remittances and decrease in supply in the country’s currency market.

Recall, the somoni last year lost nearly 7.0 percent of its value against the dollar.

Meanwhile, an average official buying rate of the euro against the somoni has risen only 0.5 percent this year – 1:10.8448 on December 31, up from 1:10.7905 on January 1.

This year, the somoni has lost 15.3 percent of its value against the Russian ruble this year – 0.156:1 on December 31, down from 0.1353:1 on January 1.
