The Dushanbe-Khujand highway has been temporarily closed for traffic after a series of avalanches today blocked the highway in some places.

Daler Merganov, a spokesman for the Branch of Innovative Road Solutions (IRS) in Tajikistan, says the work on clearing the highway of snow is under way.

“Several avalanches hit the highway in some places in the Varzob district today.  Moreover, there is risk of avalanches on other sections of the highway as well,” Merganov told Asia-Plus in an interview.

No injured was reported, according to him.

According to some source, the avalanche prone areas occupy about 75% of Tajikistan’s territory.
