Deputy Khujand Mayor, Ms. Firouza Nourullozoda, is seriously concerned over the increase in the number of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the city.

Her concern came during an address to a meeting of the city commission on COVID-19 response that took place in Khujand, the capital of the Sughd province, on July 12.

According to her, the number of COVID-19 cases has increased in the city in recent days because people have failed to practice the physical distancing and observe other sanitary norms.

Khujand Mayor, Marouf Muhammadzoda, also expressed concern about the increase in the number of COVID-19 in the city.

“The disease has progressed in recent days, and in most cases, it has ended in death,” the mayor said.

According to official data from the press center of the Khujand mayor’s office, the daily number of persons going to a hospital with COVID-19 symptoms has increased over the past week in the city from 1-2 to 8-9.

The mayor emphasized that the principal means to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 was to observe sanitary norms approved by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population.

He also ordered relevant municipal agencies to intensify an explanatory work among the population.

The Khujand commission on COVID-19 response has not provided the exact figures of the COVID-19 cases in the city.

As of the evening of July 12, the overall confirmed number of coronavirus cases in Tajikistan reached 6,552, of which 5,228 (79.8 percent) people recovered and 55 died.
