Tajik Communists have nominated their leader Miroj Abdulloyev to run for president.
An extraordinary congress of the Communist Party of Tajikistan (CPT) took place in Dushanbe on September 5.
About 100 delegates from all regions of the country reportedly participated in the congress. They unanimously voted for nominating CPT leader Miroj Abdulloyev to run for president.
They also discuss and approved the party’s election program based on the motto “A Decent Life for Every Citizen of the Country.”
Thus, six of seven officially registered political parties have noted their leaders to run for president.
The ruling People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) nominated the incumbent President Emomali Rahmon as its candidate for president.
Earlier, the League of Youth of Tajikistan and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Tajikistan had formally announced their nomination of Emomali Rahmon, suggesting that the incumbent president would participate in the upcoming presidential election.
The other candidates in the election currently comprise Rustam Latifzoda from the Agrarian Party, Abduhalim Ghafforov from the Socialist Party, Saidjaffar Usmonzoda of the Democratic Party of Tajikistan, and Rustam Rahmatzoda from the Party of Economic Reforms.
The Social-Democratic Party, which is the only officially registered opposition party in Tajikistan, has declined to nominate its candidate for president.
The CPT lost its two seats in parliament as it failed to pass a 5-percent threshold to get into Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) in March 2015.
However, it managed to win two seats in the Majlisi Namoyandagon in this year’s parliamentary elections that were held in March.
Founded in 1918, the Communist Party of Tajikistan was registered in 1991. According to some sources, the party now has about 37,000 members.
Recall, Tajikistan's parliament has set October 11 as the date for the country's next presidential election. The resolution on the election date was approved on August 6 during a joint session of both chamber of parliament.
