Tajik Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Akram Karimi has been appointed Tajikistan’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).   

Ambassador Akram Karimi presented his credentials as the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to the OIC Secretary-General, Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, in Jeddah on December 23.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed related to cooperation of Tajikistan with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and its subsidiary organs.

It was reportedly emphasized that Tajikistan as an active member of the international community, gives priority to the strengthening multilateral cooperation within the framework of the OIC.

They also exchanged views on a number of topical international and regional issues, mechanisms of addressing modern threats and challenges, and joint efforts to overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Tajikistan joined the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 1992.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states, 56 of which are also member states of the United Nations, the exception being Palestine.

It was founded by a charter in 1969 as the Organization of Islamic Conference.  The organization attempts to be the collective voice of the Muslim world (Ummah) and attempts to safeguard the interests and ensure the progress and well-being of Muslims.  On June 28, 2011, the Organization of the Islamic Conference changed its name to Organization of the Islamic Cooperation

The OIC has a permanent delegation to the United Nations, and is the largest international organization outside of the United Nations.
