More than 48,000 legal economic entities (state-run, private and others) have reportedly been registered in Tajikistan as of January 1, 2021.

There are more than 12,000 enterprises, or 25 percent of the overall number, that are reportedly not in operation in the country.

Some of them became bankrupt, while some others have not been in operation due to non-competitiveness or lack of raw materials.  Some other enterprises have not operated due to depreciation of equipment, property disputes or refocusing of them, while other enterprises have not been in operation for failure to get mining licenses or due to financial problems, tax debts, etc.

In 2020, 1,193 new enterprises were registered and 850 enterprises were liquidated.

The majority of active enterprises operate in the agrarian, trade, and construction sectors.

36 percent of the operating enterprises are located in Sughd province, 31.5 percent in Khatlon province, 18.4 percent in districts subordinate to the center and 1.7 percent in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).

According to the statistical data from the Ministry of Industry and New Technologies (MoINT), there are 2,274 industrial enterprises operating in Tajikistan.  265 of them reportedly operate in mining industry, more than 1,800 enterprises operate in processing industry and 76 others are reportedly engaged providing electricity, natural gas and water supply.

According to data from the State Committee on Investment and State-owned Property Management (GosKomInvest), besides state-run enterprises the government owns shares in 140 companies, including 136 joint-stock companies and four limited liability companies.  In 118 joint-stock companies, the government reportedly assumes the 100% ownership interest.

As of October 1, 2020, a total debt of Tajik enterprises amounted to about 87 billion somonis (equivalent to 8.2 billion U.S. dollars), according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.
