President Emomali Rahmon yesterday received Mir Rahman Rahmani, the Speaker of Afghanistan’s lower house (Wolesi Jirga, the House of Representatives) of parliament.   

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two sides discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Tajik leader, in particular, emphasized the importance of inter-parliamentary cooperation for expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

He also pointed to the need to develop the legal foundation for the bilateral cooperation between the two countries and a role of parliaments in that process. 

They also paid a special attention for the issue of the Afghanistan peace negotiations and Emomali Rahmon pointed to necessity of seeking effective ways of restoring sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Tajik leader reiterated Tajikistan’s support for efforts of Afghan government to restore peace and stability in Afghanistan.      

Emomali Rahmon especially emphasized the importance of a senior officials meeting and the 9th Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process (HoA-IP) that are expected to take place in Dushanbe on March 29 and 30.  

In the context of providing regional security, the two sides emphasized the necessity of expanding bilateral cooperation in strengthening border controls and expanding bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in addressing modern threats and challenges such as terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.  

They also exchanged views on a number of international and regional issues being of mutual interest.  

Mir Rahman Rahmani (born 1962) is an Afghan politician and businessman who is the current Speaker of Afghanistan's House of the People (Wolesi Jirga, the House of Representatives), holding the office since June 2019. He has been a member of the Wolesi Jirga since 2010.

He was elected as Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga on June 29, 2019, receiving 136 votes. 

The House of Representatives of the People or Da Afghanistan Wolesi Jirga is the lower house of the bicameral National Assembly of Afghanistan, alongside the upper House of Elders.

The House of Representatives of the People is the chamber that bears the greater burden of lawmaking in the country, as with the House of Commons in the Westminster model. It consists of 250 delegates directly elected by single non-transferable vote.  Members are elected by district and serve for five years.  The constitution guarantees at least 68 delegates to be female.  Kuchi nomads elect 10 representatives through a Single National Constituency.

The House of Representatives of the People has the primary responsibility for making and ratifying laws and approving the actions of the president.
