Asked whether they are following the situation along the Tajik-Kyrgyz border and reports of cross-border shelling in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said during a briefing on April 29 that “this is something that we are following with concern.”

“We have seen these reports, and we do follow this with concern.  We are also aware that there has been announcement by the two countries, by Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, that a ceasefire has now been agreed.  If that is the case, that would be welcome, and we would encourage both sides to continue direct negotiation to resolve any outstanding issues in a peaceful manner.”
