The United Nations jointly with Tajik authorities intends to develop a special program of preparations for admission of potential refugees from Afghanistan.

Ms. Sezin Sinanoglu, the UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan, remarked this yesterday at a meeting with Mr. Yodgor Fayzov, the Governor of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), according to the GBAO administration press center. 

In the course of the talks, the parties reportedly also discussed the current situation in neighboring Afghanistan.

GBAO governor, in particular, spoke about the experience of accepting Afghan refugees in July this year, problems existing in the region, preparatory work and coordination of joint activities, the GBAO administration press center said.  

Ms. Sinanogly, for her part, reportedly said that the main responsibility for admission of refugees and creation of conditions for them rested with the state and the government and the United States would not stand aside in providing the necessary assistance. 

The UN Resident Coordinator in Tajikistan noted that it is currently unknown how many refugees might come to Tajikistan from Afghanistan, but it is likely that refugees in Tajikistan, and there ought to prepare for these circumstances.   

Meanwhile, TOLONews says the United Nations is preparing for a likely further displacement of civilians in Afghanistan after US and international troops leave the country in September.  UN’s refugee agency says there are currently some 2.5 million registered refugees from Afghanistan globally.
