Tajik president meets with Belgian parliament speaker in Brussels to discuss cooperation

President Emomali Rahmon yesterday met in Brussels with Mrs. Eliane Tillieux, President of  the Chamber of Representatives (Belgium’s lower chamber of parliament), according to the Tajik president’s official website. 

The parties reportedly discussed issues related to political and inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Tajik leader expressed satisfaction with the good level of bilateral political and inter-parliamentary cooperation between Tajikistan and Belgium.  At the same time he pointed to the necessity of further expansion of activities of Belgium/Tajikistan Parliamentary Friendship Group. 

Rahmon and Tillieux reportedly also discussed issues of legislative, economic, trade, investment, cultural and tourist opportunities of the two counties. 

Agriculture, hydropower and industry were outlined as areas which could drive the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Belgium.  

I           n the course of the talks, the also discussed cooperation in addressing modern challenges and threats.   

Emomali Rahmon invited Mrs. Eliane Tillieux to pay visit to Tajikistan. 

The Chamber of Representatives is one of the two chambers in the bicameral Federal Parliament of Belgium, the other being the Senate.  It is considered to be the "lower house" of the Federal Parliament.

Article 62 of the Belgian Constitution fixes the number of seats in the Chamber of Representatives at 150.  There are 11 electoral districts, which correspond with the ten Provinces (five Dutch- and five French-speaking) and the Brussels-Capital Region.  

The seats are divided among the political parties using the D'Hondt method of proportional representation, which slightly favors large parties and coalitions.  There is an electoral threshold of 5%.
