Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Speaker Rustam Emomali, who is also the Mayor of Dushanbe, Wednesday arrived in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on an official visit.

Navrouz Qurbonzoda, a spokesman for the Majlisi Milli, says heads of Majlisi Milli committees and Majlisi Milli’s office are accompanying Emomali on his visit to Turkmenistan.

At Ashgabat International Airport, Rustam Emomali was reportedly met by deputy head of the Halk Maslahaty (People’s Council – Turkmenistan’s upper house of parliament) and Tajikistan’s ambassador to Turkmenistan.

According to Qurbonzoda, the purpose of the visit is for Rustam Emomali to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Forum of the countries of Central Asia and the Russian Federation that will take place in the Turkmen capital this week.

It is the fourth official visit of Rustam Emomali abroad.  In May 2020, Rustam Emomali paid an official visit to the Russian Federation in his capacity as Speaker of the Majlisi Milli.  In late September last year, he paid an official visit to Kazakhstan.  In early March this year, Rustam Emomali paid an official visit to Azerbaijan in his capacity as speaker of Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament.

Meanwhile, some experts note that these visits of Rustam Emomali signal his emerging role.
