On Tuesday November 8, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met with the President of the World Bank David Malpass in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on the sidelines of COP27.

The Tajik president’s official website says the parties discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the World Bank.

Emomali Rahmon reportedly expressed satisfaction with the level of partnership between Tajikistan and the World Bank and the effective role of this authoritative international financial institution in the implementation of economic and social development projects and programs in Tajikistan and in assisting the country during the coronavirus pandemic and eliminating its consequences.

They also exchanged views on the search for new ways of cooperation in reducing the impact of external factors on the economy of Tajikistan, the implementation of investment infrastructure development projects in the country, the elimination of export-import restrictions and the transit of goods and products, as well as other issues being of mutual interest.

Tajikistan joined the World Bank in 1993 and the International Development Association (IDA) in 1994.  Currently, the World Bank is financing 23 projects in Tajikistan totaling US$1.4 billion.  Since 1996, it provided US$2.5 billion in IDA grants, highly concessional credits, and trust funds for Tajikistan.  The World Bank is committed to continuing its support for Tajikistan as it strives to improve the lives and meet the aspirations of its young and growing population.
