A pig-breeder from Bobojon-Ghafourov district in Sughd province, faces charges of polluting the environment and waters of the Syr Darya River.

The Office of the Committee for Environmental Protection in Sughd province reported on May 24 that employees of the Department for Water Resources Protection and officers of the Bobojon-Ghafourov prosecutor’s office have revealed the fact of pollution of natural sources (land and water) with waste of the pig-breeding farm pig farm, located in Boghi Bolo village, Yova jamoat of the Bobojon-Ghafourov district.

The Bobojon-Ghafourov prosecutor’s office has reportedly instituted against the pig-breeding farm owner, Ya. Temirov, under the provisions of two articles of Tajikistan’s Penal Code: Article 226 – pollution of water; and Article 228 – damage of land.  An investigation is under way.  

Article 226 stipulates that water pollution is punishable by 140 to 240 hours of compulsory labor, or by a fine in the amount equal to 500 calculating indicators (current on calculating indicator is equal to 68.00 somonis), or up to two years in correctional labor, or two years in prison.  

Article 228 stipulates that damage of land stipulates damage of land is punishable by a fine in the amount equal to 500 calculating indicators, or by up to two years in prison.   

The Office of the Committee for Environmental Protection in Sughd province says Temirov has paid 11,263.94 somonis in fine so far.
