At least 10 people killed and 13 others injured in Kulob traffic accident

At least ten people were killed and thirteen others were injured Sunday as Chinese-made big-truck rammed several cars and crashed into residential buildings in the southern city of Kulob, Khatlon province.

According to the Interior Ministry’s official website, the accident took place at about 7:30 pm on the Juma Street near “Somoni” bazaar.  

According to the Interior Ministry, the truck's braking system failed.  The report says there are deaths and injuries as a result of the accident.  But the Interior Ministry has not yet reported the death toll from this accident.

The Interior Ministry says the truck belongs to Kafolat Voridotu Sodirot Company. 

Meanwhile, an official source within the Kulob health directorate has told Asia-Plus that according to the preliminary data, ten people were killed and thirteen others were injured in that accident. 

“Two of those injured were released after receiving first aid and the remaining eleven injured were hospitalized; five of them are now in intensive care,” the source said.   

Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, known locally as Radio Ozodi, reports that at least fourteen people were killed in the yesterday traffic accident in Kulob. 

Citing the Kulob health directorate, Radio Ozodi said yesterday there may be more victims of the accident since not all the dead and injured were removed from the crumpled cars and damaged houses.  

The Prosecutor-General’s Office is investigating the cause of this accident.   By president’s order the interior and health ministers, Khatlon governor and some other officials have gone to the scene of the accident. 

According to data from the Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, seven vehicles and three residential buildings have been damaged as a result of the accident.
