On Thursday November 9, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon met in Tashkent with his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the sidelines of the 16th Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Summit.

The Tajik president’s official website says the two leaders reviewed further strengthening of bilateral ties of good neighborliness, strategic partnership and alliance.

Rahmon and Mirziyoyev, in particular, noted importance of coordinated work, including in the framework of the intergovernmental commission for expansion of trade, advancement of cooperation projects in machine building, energy sector, textile and other industries.

A special attention was reportedly paid to expansion of business partnership between the regions, cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

The hope was expressed that a state visit of Uzbekistan’s president to Tajikistan, which is expected to take place next year, “will provide effective assistance to the further development of relations between the two countries and bringing relations between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to the level of allies.”

The parties reportedly agreed to hold a number of events such as economic and investment forum, forums of scientists and youth, meeting of women leaders, friendship days, joint exhibitions of goods and sports activities under the framework of that visit.

Rahmon and Mirziyoyev also exchanged views on a number of issues being of mutual interest, the Tajik president’s official website said.
