The Republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic Republic of Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for parliamentary cooperation.

Iran’s official news agency IRNA says the documents was signed in Iran’s capital, Tehran, on January 8. 

Recall, Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Chairman Rustam Emomali arrived in Tehran at the head of the high-level parliamentary delegation on a two-day official visit Monday morning. 

The same day, he was welcomed by Bagher Ghalibaf, Chairman of the Majlis-e Shura-ye Eslami (the unicameral parliament of Iran).

Emomali and Ghalibaf reportedly signed and exchanged the memorandum of understanding for parliamentary cooperation following their meeting.

Enhancing the parliamentary ties between the two countries and improving bilateral ties were among the topics of talks between the two parties, according to IRNA.

The Majlisi Olii (Supreme Assembly) of the Republic of Tajikistan is the bicameral parliament of Tajikistan that was introduced in September 1999.  It has two chambers: Majlisi Namoyandagon (Assembly of Representatives), the lower chamber with 63 members elected for a five-year term; and Majlisi Milli (National Assembly). The upper chamber with 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by members of local legislatures and 8 appointed by the president.  

The Majlis-e Shura-ye Eslami (Islamic Consultative Assembly, or ICA) is the unicameral parliament of the Islamic Republic of Iran.  Iran’s national legislative body currently consists of 290 representatives, an increase from the previous 272 seats since the February 18, 2000 election
