A two-day official visit (January 8-9) of Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Chairman Rustam Emomali to the Islamic Republic of Iran has resulted in signing of a number of cooperation documents.

The Majlisi Milli press center says Tajik and Iranian entrepreneurs have signed cooperation agreement aimed at developing manufacturing and processing sectors in Tajikistan.  

According to the press center, the total amount of signed documents is more than 1.3 billion somonis (about 119 million U.S. dollars).  

The documents reportedly cover a wide range of areas, including chemical and textile industries, construction, and pharmaceutics.  

It is noted that cooperation will be implemented with an emphasis on the use of internal resources of Tajikistan under support of Iranian partners.  

The Majlisi Milli press center notes that in all, 15 new documents regarding inter-parliamentary cooperation and cooperation between the regions of the countries as well as joint initiatives in economic and humanitarian fields. 

Meanwhile, Iran Daily notes that the head of the Iran-Tajikistan Parliamentary Friendship Group believes that despite the tripling of the bilateral trade in two years, the two countries are still far from the ideal in the field of developing economic relations.

Talking to Iran Daily, Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi reportedly added that the volume of trade between the two countries will top 300 million US dollars by the end of the current Iranian year (March 19, 2024).

“During the first visit of President Ebrahim Raisi to Tajikistan, the presidents set an annual trade target of 500 million US dollars, which we hope will be realized within a period of one to two years,” the lawmaker said.

According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Iran over the first nine months of this year has valued at has valued at US$175.1922 million, which is 11.4 percent more than in the same period last year.  This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Iran estimated at US$63.0261 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Iran US$112.1661 million.
