According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President, the number of officially registered unemployed in Tajikistan in December last year was 48,300, which 12.1 percent fewer than in November last year and 9.7 percent fewer than in December 2022.

Women reportedly make up 46.3% of the officially registered unemployed.

The officially registered unemployed make up 1.8 percent of the total number of able-bodied people in Tajikistan. 

In December last year, a total workforce in Tajikistan reportedly stood at about 2.7 million.  

It should be clarified that it is about those unemployed who have been registered with subdivisions of the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Employment of the Population (MoLMEP), while the actual number of employed in Tajikistan is much more.  

Many Tajiks have left the country seeking better employment opportunities

Labor migrants are still a critical component in the economy of Tajikistan and their remittances keep many struggling families at home above the poverty line.

According to data from a MoLMEP, an estimated 600,000 Tajik seasonal workers now travel abroad each year, primarily to Russia, seeking better employment opportunities. 

The Agency for Statistics says am average monthly wage in Tajikistan in December last year was 2,381 somonis (US$217.00), while in Russia, an average monthly wage in December last year was 103,815 Russian ruble (US$1,146).
