A Tajik citizen who escaped from a prison in Lipetsk, Davron Jabburov, was apprehended in the village of Ulusarki in the Zadonsky district of the Lipetsk oblast, Russian media report.  According to the Telegram channels Mash and Shot, he is suspected of having initiated the escape.

News of the breakout from Lipetsk’s Penal Colony No. 2 surfaced on the morning of October 26.  Among the six escapees were five individuals from Uzbekistan and one from Tajikistan, who were imprisoned for offenses including rape, drug trafficking, and robbery.

The 27-year-old Davron Jabburov was sentenced to six years in prison in 2022 for rape and robbery.  He had been transferred to the Lipetsk colony from Serpukhov in July of last year.

According to a law enforcement source in Lenta.ru, the escape from Penal Colony No. 2 was discovered on October 25, around 8:50 PM, when a routine inspection revealed traces of an underground tunnel, leading to a headcount that confirmed the absence of six inmates.

65-meter tunnel dug over six months

According to Mash, the prisoners had planned the escape for more than half a year, having stolen tools seven months ago to start digging. They tunneled approximately 65 meters from the industrial zone, where they worked on woodworking.

The entrance to the tunnel was camouflaged with boards and debris, and they carefully scattered the excavated soil instead of piling it up. Preliminary reports suggest that the inmates felt their sentences were overly harsh, which motivated their escape.

To-date, five of six fugitives have reportedly been detained: three of them have been detained in Lipetsk oblast and two others have been detained in Tambov oblast.  The search for another fugitive is under way.

A law enforcement source told Lenta.ru that Lipetsk’s Penal Colony No. 2, established in 1961, is highly regarded by the Federal Penitentiary Service. The facility has a large industrial zone where prisoners manufacture reinforced concrete products, engage in metalworking, and participate in textile production.
