Press release

On November 8, one of the larger health facilities in Khatlon’s Balkhi district, a maternity ward at the central district hospital was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon.

This project with the funding volume of up to 59 million somonis (5 million 145 025 thousand Euros) was realized within the framework of the "Mother and Child Health/Emergency Care" program phases II-V, funded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the German Development Bank (KfW) and implemented by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the population of the Republic of Tajikistan. The overall budget for the phases II-V, within which two oblast level Perinatal centers and four central district hospitals were reconstructed and rehabilitated, amounts to 45.5 million Euros.

The project involved a comprehensive set of measures, including the construction of a new hospital facility and rehabilitation of the existing building, which was also supported by the government contribution. It also encompassed the installation of advanced medical and non-medical equipment designed to enhance diagnosis and treatment capabilities, such as digital X-ray and ultrasound machines, newborn incubators, and respiratory equipment for both children and adults. In addition, the hospital is outfitted with essential systems to support its operations, including ventilation, heating, medical gas infrastructure, and solar collectors.

At the same time the hospital staff was trained in the use of clinical equipment, hospital management, waste management, building and equipment maintenance by qualified international and national specialists. In addition, partnership agreements were developed with top-ranked healthcare institutes in Germany for training and exchange of knowledge and experience.

The hospital will be serving over 218 000 people from Balkhi and neighboring districts, which will significantly improve access to essential health services for the people in the region, thus marking another significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare delivery in Tajikistan.

The construction and rehabilitation works started in 2019 by local construction company “Obi Hayot” with the supervision and assurance of quality control from the international consulting company GOPA-Infra and were successfully completed in August of 2024.

It is important to note that KfW has been active in Tajikistan's health sector since 2003 and over the past 20 years has implemented programs within the framework of German-Tajik financial cooperation in the field of maternal and child health/emergency care, tuberculosis control, treatment and prevention of polio in the amount of 115 million euros.
