Tajikistan and the European Union (EU) have signed an agreement worth approximately 20 million euros.

Tajik state-run news agency Khovar says the document was inked in Dushanbe on December 3 by Hokim Kholiqzoda, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Ambassador Raimundas Karoblis, Head of the EU Delegation to Tajikistan.

The agreement provides a grant of 19.88 million euros, which will be directed towards supporting the green transition in Tajikistan, including through the development of agriculture.

The project will focus on creating a sustainable cotton value chain, one of the country’s key economic sectors.

The main objectives of the project include:

  • Implementing digital technologies in agriculture to increase production efficiency;
  • Supporting small and medium-sized businesses and creating favorable conditions for their development in the agricultural sector;
  • Promoting innovation in agriculture and other important economic sectors, which will contribute to ecological sustainability and sustainable economic growth.

“The signing of this agreement reflects the EU’s efforts to support environmentally clean technologies and sustainable economic development in Tajikistan,” the EU Delegation noted.

Previously, the EU allocated 91 million euros for cooperation with Tajikistan for the period of 2021-2024.  These funds will be directed towards three priority areas: inclusive green and digital economy, human resource development, and rational use of natural resources, efficiency, and sustainability.

In 2023, the European Union financed projects in Tajikistan totaling more than 75 million euros.
