On March 4, the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Adylbek Kasymaliyev, together with the Prime Minister of Tajikistan, Qohir Rasoulzoda, visited the construction site of the Roghun hydropower plant (HPP), Tajikistan’s state-run news agency Khovar reports.

Qohir Rasoulzoda personally led the tour for the Kyrgyz Prime Minister, during which Adylbek Kasymaliyev was briefed on the construction progress, the scale of the largest hydropower project in Central Asia, as well as the plant’s technical characteristics and its role in ensuring regional energy security.

Special attention was given to studying the experience of hydropower construction in the context of implementing the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant project in Kyrgyzstan, Akchabar.kg reports.

“The experience gained in building the Roghun HPP is of great value to us. Studying the technologies and methods used here will undoubtedly help us successfully implement the Kambarata-1 HPP project, which is of strategic importance for the energy security of our country and the entire region,” said Adylbek Kasymaliyev.

The Kyrgyz Prime Minister was informed that on October 29, 2016, with the participation of President Emomali Rahmon, the Vakhsh River was diverted, laying the foundation for the world’s tallest hydropower dam—the 335-meter-high Roghun HPP.

On November 16, 2018, Emomali Rahmon inaugurated the first unit of the Roghun Hydropower Plant, marking the start of electricity generation. On September 9, 2019, Tajikistan’s Independence Day, the second unit of the Roghun HPP began operating.

It is worth noting that during yesterday’s meeting between Tajik Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda and Kyrgyz Cabinet Chairman Adylbek Kasymaliyev, they discussed prospects for trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, including the resumption of direct flights between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
