Press release by the Digital Foundations Project Implementation Unit

On May 16, Tajikistan officially launched the Tajikistan Digital Foundations project during an event in Dushanbe attended by government officials, development partners, and representatives of international organizations and the private sector.

The initiative is reportedly being implemented by the State Institution Digital Foundations Project Implementation Unit under the Executive Office of the President, with support from the World Bank and the Swiss Cooperation Office.

The project aims to drive digital transformation of public services and improve the digital skills of the population, with a strong focus on transparency, efficiency, and accessibility.

In his opening remarks, the Unit Director Muhammad Asror thanked development partners and emphasized that the initiative would help lay the groundwork for sustainable development and improved quality of life across Tajikistan.

Key project components include:

  • Digital literacy programs such as courses, workshops, and trainings;
  • Support for women entrepreneurs through targeted programs;
  • Upgrading educational infrastructure in vulnerable areas, including internet connectivity for schools, teacher training, and courses on cyberethics and cybersecurity to prepare youth for life in the digital age.

Speakers at the event underscored the importance of a collaborative approach, involving communities, educational institutions, and the private sector. To this end, working groups have been established with representatives from various sectors.

Charles Herpy, Senior Digital Development Specialist at the World Bank, called the initiative an ambitious program designed to build Tajikistan’s digital public infrastructure and empower citizens with essential digital competencies.
